As a life-long registered Democrat and retired academic who grew up in California when it had the best public education system in the country and was a lovely place to live for the vast majority of the population, I watched with incredulity the recent Democratic presidential debates (“The noisy parade of the debutantes,” Web, June 27).

The party of my young adulthood, which valued intellect, reason, critical thinking and “the greatest good for the greatest number,” has been replaced by a party which today values the tyranny of one. That ’one’ is above all any offended member of the protected classes or any one female false accuser who wishes to destroy the life of any member of the non-protected classes.

Is this how we want to live?
