ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a New York police chief saved a man’s life after he was critically injured in a two-car crash.
State police say 54-year-old Robert P. Gelinas Jr., of Ithaca, was driving on Route 13 in the Tompkins County town of Ithaca around 2:40 p.m. Thursday when he cut in front of another car while making a left turn.
Troopers say Gelinas wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and suffered a serious head injury in the collision.
Troopers say city of Ithaca Police Chief Pete Tyler was traveling in the area and stopped to help. Police say Tyler started life-saving measures before troopers and emergency crews arrived.
Gelinas was airlifted to a Syracuse hospital, where he’s in critical condition.
The other driver, a 24-year-old pregnant woman, was checked out a hospital as a precaution.
