The polar vortex that’s bringing misery to the Midwest is making an appearance in northern New England, with subzero temperatures and dangerous wind chills.

Meteorologist Tom Hawley from the National Weather Service said the temperature plunged to 14 below zero in Whitfield, New Hampshire. That was the coldest location in the region outside of Mount Washington, where it was 26 below, with a wind chill of 72 below.

Many places were struggling to reach the single digits on Thursday.

Cold temperatures created trouble for firefighters battling a fire in Saco, Maine. Deputy Chief David Pendleton said frozen water from hoses contributed to “slips, trips and falls.”

The deep freeze will be followed by a warming trend. The temperature will climb to the 40s and 50s next week in southern Maine and New Hampshire.
