MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The University of Memphis says it wants to begin operating an independent student apartment complex to improve its aging housing supply.
The university said its Board of Trustees approved a request Tuesday for the school to move forward with the process of managing and eventually acquiring the Gather on Southern apartments.
University President David Rudd said in a statement that the average age of housing at the public university is 57 years. He noted that building new residence halls comes at a high cost.
Rudd said the apartment complex “allows us an alternative that is affordable and attractive.”
The Commercial Appeal reports that the five-year-old, 435-bed complex has seen recent criminal incidents. Rudd tells the newspaper that making the building part of campus would extend university security to the complex.
