CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Public schools are closed across West Virginia as dangerously cold weather blankets the state.
Dozens of county school districts called off classes for Wednesday. Some college campuses also planned to close.
Forecasters say temperatures are expected to fall throughout the day. A steady breeze will send wind chill readings well below zero, causing frostbite on exposed skin in a matter of minutes.
Authorities are encouraging residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and not to leave portable heaters, wood-burning stoves or fireplaces turned on when away.
