NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - A settlement has been reached that would resolve a $54 million federal civil rights lawsuit filed against New London police in connection with the 2014 death of a man in police custody.

The Day reports the settlement requires City Council approval and comes as trial preparations are underway. Details of the deal haven’t been disclosed.

Thirty-one-year-old Lashano Gilbert, a Bahamas native, died after a violent struggle with several officers after escaping from a holding cell. Officers used pepper spray and a stun gun on him as they struggled to restrain him. A prosecutor found the officers’ use of force justified.

The medical examiner’s office said Gilbert died as a result of the altercation and his “acute psychosis complicated (by) sickle cell hemoglobinopathy.”

Gilbert’s family’s lawyer declined to comment Wednesday.
