COVENTRY, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont environmental commission held a marathon panel hearing on potential expansion plans for a landfill.

Opponents on Tuesday evening urged the District 7 Environmental Commission to deny an Act 250 permit amendment for expansion of Vermont’s only operating landfill in Coventry over odor and water quality concerns. The Caledonian-Record reports Canadians were also present to voice their concerns about the water quality of a nearby lake that may be impacted by a landfill expansion.

Act 250 is Vermont’s development control law. Casella Waste Systems wants to expand its landfill by 51 acres - thus expanding the landfill’s lifespan.

The commission is expected to issue a decision sometime this spring and no other hearings are planned.
