RAHWAY, N.J. (AP) - Fire officials say a 44-year-old woman has died in a New Jersey house fire.

The fire broke out around 6:15 a.m. Wednesday in Rahway.

Fire Chief Michael Roberts says the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, and Shonda Smith was found dead in a second-floor bedroom.

Smith’s adult son, mother and brother were able to escape the home, which had working smoke detectors.

Roberts say one firefighter suffered an eye injury, and a police officer was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and a burn to his neck and ear.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
