EPPING, N.D. (AP) - State officials say a valve leak is to blame for the spill of nearly 20,000 gallons of saltwater in Williams County.

Whiting Oil and Gas Corp. reported Tuesday that 469 barrels of brine spilled at a well about 10 miles southeast of Epping. Brine, or saltwater, is a byproduct of oil production.

The state Oil and Gas Division says the brine was contained on-site and cleanup is underway. A state inspector has visited the site and will monitor the cleanup.
