President Trump told his Cabinet Wednesday that his job would be “a lot easier if I just relaxed and enjoyed the presidency like a lot of other people have done.”
Mr. Trump made the comment while noting that he spent the Christmas and New Year’s holidays at the White House, waiting for Democrats to make a deal with him that could have ended the partial government shutdown. He said it was lonely in the White House.
Acting Attorney General Matthew G. Whitaker praised the president for “giving up” the Christmas and New Year’s holiday, “while some members of Congress went on vacation.”
Vice President Mike Pence noted that he, too, stayed in Washington over the holidays. He also complimented the president.
“I want to thank you for the strong stand you have taken on border security,” Mr. Pence said at the Cabinet meeting.
The president skipped his traditional holiday trip to his exclusive Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, during the partial shutdown.
