OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A new website is hoping to make it easier to get involved with hundreds of nonprofits in the Omaha and Council Bluffs area by creating a place where residents can easily see what organizations need.

The SHARE Omaha website launched Thursday, The Omaha World-Herald reported. The site includes information about what local nonprofits need in terms of volunteers, money or items.

The platform has an all-inclusive approach and lists organizations of various sizes and with various missions, said Marjorie Maas, SHARE Omaha’s executive director. The goal is to make it easier for local residents to find nonprofits that need help, she said.

“The comment I hear most often is, ’How come we haven’t done this before?’” Maas said.

More than 200 nonprofits are listed on the site, with organizations based in Douglas, Sarpy, Dodge, Saunders and Washington counties in Nebraska, and Pottawattamie, Mills and Harrison counties in Iowa.

David Scott of the Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation proposed the idea in Omaha after seeing a similar project in North Carolina.

The idea’s potential was immediately apparent to Tom Neal, the executive director of Omaha nonprofit Help, which connects people with low-cost medical equipment.

“It’s really a one-stop shop for people who want to help,” Neal said. “Maybe they don’t know exactly what organization they want to help, but they can look through it and sample some of the different organizations out there. And it isn’t just about money. It could be volunteering time.
