ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The state of New York is filing a lawsuit against the federal government over quota allocations for an important species of commercial fish that Gov. Andrew Cuomo says are unfair.
The fish in question is summer flounder, also called fluke, which is the subject of one of New York’s most significant commercial fisheries. U.S. fishermen caught nearly 8 million pounds of the food fish in 2016, and more than 600,000 of those pounds came to New York docks.
Cuomo and Attorney General Letitia James in a Monday announcement said the state’s initiated a lawsuit seeking a revised allocation to give New York fishers “an equitable share based on” current fishery data.
A call to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration went unanswered. The agency’s affected by the federal government shutdown.
