BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man has died in a wreck as he was being chased by police for leaving a traffic stop.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release that 26-year-old Jawara A. Brunson of Batesburg-Leesville died in the wreck around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Fisher said Brunson tried to avoid a traffic stop in Batesburg-Leesville and police chased him.

Highway Patrol Cpl. Judd Jones said Brunson’s car ran off the right side of a road and hit a garbage can. The car then ran off the left side of the road and crashed into a tree and overturned.

Fisher said Brunson was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.
