GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - A county employee in the Mississippi Delta has been assigned to different job duties after qualifying to run against a county supervisor.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports Derrick “Chitchy” Chambers is challenging Leflore County Supervisor Robert Collins in the November election. Each is running as an independent.

Chambers entered the race Jan. 16, and he says “things felt different” when he went to work after that. Chambers was told Jan. 18 that he would no longer be the assistant road foreman and was being transferred to a desk job.

Chambers says road manager Jerry Smith told him that Collins wanted him off the road crew.

The newspaper reports Collins declined to comment a dozen times when asked if he ordered that his political rival be moved to a different job.
