LEEDS, Ala. (AP) - A driver and passenger of a vehicle have been shot and injured on Interstate 20 in Alabama.

Leeds Police Chief Jim Atkinson tells Al.com two vehicles were traveling eastbound and an 18-wheeler was behind them Saturday.

The trucker told police he noticed both vehicles driving erratically. He said he then saw someone in one of the vehicles open fire on the other vehicle, a Chevrolet Impala.

The Impala ran off the roadway and hit a tree. The other vehicle fled. Police and fire medics had to extricate the victims from the crashed vehicle. The 34-year-old driver was shot in both legs. The 25-year-old female passenger was shot in the abdomen. They’re both in stable condition.

Atkinson says investigators don’t believe the shooting was random. Video from the 18-wheeler captured the incident.
