SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina state superintendent of education has declared a fiscal emergency in the Sumter School District, citing the district’s failure to comply with its own financial recovery plan.
The Sumter Item reports Superintendent Molly Spearman declared the emergency Wednesday. The district overspent its budget by $6.2 million in Fiscal Year 2016, and its general fund balance fell to about $100,000. The minimum fund balance goal is $12 million.
It voted last year to close two elementary schools with low enrollment at the end of the 2017-18 school year to save money. The district voted this month to reopen of one of the elementary schools and submitted an updated financial plan, which state department spokesman Ryan Brown says essentially wasn’t sustainable.
The district’s board plans to discuss the declaration Thursday.
