MARION, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts firefighter has died after battling a chimney fire.
Marion’s Town Manager and Fire Chief say Thomas Nye died Wednesday after suffering what is believed to be a cardiac incident. He was 72.
Officials say Nye had helped extinguish the chimney fire in Marion shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday and returned home. He collapsed early Wednesday morning and was pronounced dead at a hospital in Wareham.
Nye had served as a firefighter with the town since 1974, and he was a Vietnam war veteran. He was married for 53 years, had two adult sons, five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
The Nye family says he “lived a full, active and proud life.” A funeral with fire department and military honors is anticipated.
