BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - The owner of a Connecticut taxi company has admitted to filing false tax returns.

William Scalzi, owner of West Haven-based Transportation General Inc., waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty Monday to subscribing a false tax return. The Connecticut Post reports that the 61-year-old Scalzi admitted he understated his taxable income by running personal expenses through his company.

Court documents say Scalzi used his company’s credit cards to pay for numerous personal expenses and deducted them as business expenses on Transportation General’s corporate tax returns.

Scalzi has agreed to pay nearly $300,000 in restitution to the IRS. He faces up to three years in prison.

Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

This story has been corrected to show that Transportation General is a taxi company, not a trucking company.
