SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Springfield police say an officer shot and killed an armed man during a confrontation at an apartment complex.

The city said in a news release that officers responding to an emergency call Monday night forced open an apartment door after hearing a female screaming for help. Police say the man inside refused to comply with commands and moved toward officers with a knife.

One officer fired at the suspect. Responders tried unsuccessfully to provide lifesaving procedures.

The suspect, 38-year-old Bryan Ryder, of Springfield, died at the scene.

No officers were injured. The female in the apartment was treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.
