Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said Tuesday that he is being “prodded” by family members to run for president in 2020.

He said at a question-and-answer session at the University of Delaware that he had just held a family meeting about the possibility of what would be a third bid for the White House.

“Prodded by my son Hunter, my wife Jill and my daughter … there is a consensus that they, the most important people in my life, want me to run,” he said in a video posted by NBC News.

Mr. Biden didn’t formally toss his hat into the already-crowded Democratic ring, though he did say he is “very close to getting to a decision.”

He said he would make sure that a path to success exists because he would want to run a “fool’s errand” campaign.

But the threshold question of family approval — he noted that his children and grandchildren had lived their lives in the public eye and are “not naive” — had been passed successfully.

“The first hurdle for me is deciding whether or not I am comfortable taking the family through what would be a very very very difficult campaign … I am certain where the family is,” Mr. Biden said.
