CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A fundraiser is aimed at helping school employees in one West Virginia county who won’t get paid for the recent two-day strike.
Putnam County was the only county in West Virginia where public schools were open while union workers were on the picket lines Tuesday and Wednesday. Schools in the other counties will make up the lost class time, and those teachers and school service workers will get paid.
An online crowdsourcing campaign set up for the Putnam County workers raised more than $8,000 in its first day. The nonprofit group Rise Up WV is managing the funds.
A strike fund last year raised more than $330,000 and helped more than 950 state school employees following a nine-day strike.
