PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Police have identified the person who was found dead in an apartment fire in Portland, Maine.

Authorities say 64-year-old Linda Butterworth is believed to have died before the fire broke out in her living room Monday afternoon.

The state fire marshal’s office says the fire was likely caused by smoking materials that ignited fabric on a chair.

The state medical examiner’s office is awaiting test results before determining Butterworth’s cause of death.

Fire officials say working smoke detectors and fast-acting neighbors limited the fire damage to the one unit.

About 30 tenants were displaced after the fire, but nearly all were allowed to return by Monday night.
