NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) - A former student at a Massachusetts high school has sued the school, saying officials mishandled an alleged sexual assault on a bus by another student.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that the lawsuit says officials at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School in Northampton didn’t investigate the assault, and instead blamed the then 15-year-old plaintiff.

The suit says the assault happened in 2016 on a bus returning from a wrestling meet.

The plaintiff says the former wrestling coach and a chaperone didn’t intervene, and a former assistant principal later banned the alleged victim from extracurricular activities.

The student has since transferred to another school.

Current Superintendent Andrew Linkenhoker and school trustees said they could not comment on pending litigation.

Attempts to contact the former wrestling coach were unsuccessful.
