COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Thousands of residents in Colorado Springs were without power after high winds shattered windows and downed power poles.

The Gazette reports that the National Weather Service in Pueblo says sensors on Wednesday picked up gusts of more than 70 mph (more than 110 kph). An area near the Air Force Academy saw 79 mph (127 kph) gusts.

Wind gusts of 89 mph were recorded at the summit of Pikes Peak.

Colorado Springs Utilities spokesman says Steve Berry between 8,500 and 9,000 customers lost power.

Colorado Springs School District 11 spokeswoman Devra Ashby says three elementary schools lost power in the outage.

Power was restored to all customers by mid-afternoon.

Ashby says about five windows in Doherty High School’s atrium were shattered by the wind. No students were injured.
