WARREN, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island middle school has canceled classes after a large number of teachers called in sick over what a union said were growing concerns about safety at the school.

In a statement, the Bristol Warren Education Association said administrators have failed to adequately address rising behavioral problems among students at Kickemuit Middle School. The union said that has led to “undue stress and anxiety” among teachers frustrated by frequent disruptions and worried about the safety of both students and staff at the school.

The Bristol Warren district informed parents in a recorded message that the school would be closed Friday due to a “high number of adult illnesses” but had no other comment.

The union said it was hoping for a plan to address student discipline and other issues.
