MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont College of Fine Arts has appointed interim president Leslie Ward as the college’s next president.

Ward has served as the college’s interim president since founder and president Tom Greene announced in June that he would be taking a year-long sabbatical before resigning next summer.

Greene will return to teach in the college’s writing and publishing master’s program with the title of founding president emeritus.

Ward will assume the role of president on July 1, 2020, The Times Argus reported.

Greene founded VCFA in 2006 by creating a nonprofit that bought the historic Vermont College campus and three master’s writing programs from Union Institute and University.

Ward is a graduate of VCFA’s master’s writing program and a former trustee, according to a statement from the college.

“I am deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees for this honor,” Ward said in the statement. “I have always known VCFA is a special place worth investing time and energy, and I’m looking forward to leading it into its second decade.”
