PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s Department of Transportation celebrated the early completion of a crucial bridge on Thursday.
The $10.8 million Oxford Street Bridge project wrapped up in two months, way ahead of schedule.
The bridge is short but critical to the area since it carries 160,000 vehicles a day on Interstate 95, according to the Department of Transportation.
The agency said the work was conducted one lane at a time and the workers used prefabbed beans and deck to complete it quickly.
“We have gone in the last four years from less than 50% of our projects being on time and on budget, to now as we stand here, over 90% of our projects are like this one,” said agency director Peter Alviti.
The department credits the use of design-build type of construction management in helping reduce delays and allow for schedule changes and allow for more economical and timely completions.
