LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles television news helicopter made a precautionary landing after it was struck in flight by an object that may have been a drone.

KABC-TV reports its AIR7 HD helicopter was flying near downtown Wednesday evening at an altitude of about 1,100 feet (335 meters) when the crew heard and felt the strike.

Helicopter reporter Chris Christi says they initially assumed it was a bird strike. But when they landed, they found dents and holes.

The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted that the situation could have been a disaster and said that in addition to federal aviation regulations the city has an ordinance imposing altitude and other restrictions on drone flights.
