Residents in some parts of New England are going to have to shovel out before they ring in the new year.

More than a foot of snow fell before a relentless two-day storm began winding down. The snow stopped Tuesday afternoon, giving people time to get snow cleared away ahead of New Year’s festivities.

Gov. Janet Mills ordered all state offices closed Tuesday in Maine, where the storm dumped 16 inches of snow in Waterboro, 14 inches in Gorham 13.5 inches in Bethel, and 12.9 inches at the Portland International Jetport.

Tubbs said the heaviest accumulations were in southern and western Maine and across the White Mountains of New Hampshire. But the storm spread misery across the region with snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain.. More than 2,000 homes and businesses remained in the dark in Massachusetts.

In New Hampshire, First Night activities were on schedule in Claremont and Portsmouth, but the annual fireworks display at Hampton Beach was canceled due to inclement weather.
