AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s winter hunting seasons for birds and game animals are in effect in the state.

The hunting seasons include snowshoe hare, bobcat, fox and coyote. The seasons have varying bag limits and ending dates.

Winter is also a popular time for game bird hunters in the state of Maine. There are seasons for quail, pheasant and numerous species of ducks. The bird seasons also have differing rules, and hunters are encouraged to check with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife before hunting.

Hunting in Maine slows down in late winter and spring. The next major hunt is the spring wild turkey hunt in May.
