AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The director of the joint staff of the Maine National Guard says it’s “hard not to get emotional” after retiring after 37 years.

Brig. Gen. Dwaine Drummond enlisted as a supply clerk in 1983 and rose through the ranks to staff sergeant before being commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1990 through officer candidate school.

His assignments included executive officer of the 133rd Engineer Battalion during a deployment to Iraq. He served as director of the joint staff since 2016.

The adjutant general for Maine, Maj. Gen. Douglas A. Farnham, recognized Drummond at a retirement gathering on Dec. 7.
