OPINION:
Back in 1972, Pete McCloskey was a popular congressman from Northern California. Mr. McCloskey was so upset and offended by the actions of Richard Nixon that he challenged the incumbent president in the Republican primaries. He didn’t win, but he proved to be more than a mosquito on the proverbial elephant’s backside.
Last week former Rep. Joe Walsh, Illinois Republican, announced he is considering challenging President Trump in the 2020 Republican primaries (“Joe Walsh expected to announce Trump primary challenge: Report,” Web, Aug. 21). My hope is that he calls Mr. McCloskey before making his final decision. I’m not one to wager bets, but a Walsh campaign could prove to be more than a fool’s errand.
Mr. Walsh has already apologized to the American people for helping elect Mr. Trump in 2016. No one I know would expect him to apologize for challenging the incumbent now.
