AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s annual day for youth hunters to take to the woods in search of bears has arrived.
Saturday is Youth Bear Day. Licensed junior hunters in Maine are allowed to hunt bears using firearms, archery or crossbows. They’re also allowed to use bait, which is used in most Maine bear hunting.
Youth Bear Day typically marks the start of the bear seasons, which begins in earnest on Monday. Hunters can pursue bruins in Maine until Nov. 30. The busiest portion of the season is the part in which bait is legal. That lasts until Sept. 21.
