SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - An Orange County woman has been charged with embezzling more than $700,000 from high school student body funds.

Cynthia Marie Campbell of Midway pleaded not guilty Friday to 222 felony counts.

Prosecutors say Campbell was a student finance clerk at Esperanza High School in Anaheim who stole the money for years by writing checks to herself, her husband and her dead mother.

She retired two years ago. A school district audit revealed the missing Associated Student Body funds.

If she’s convicted, the 64-year-old Campbell could be sentenced to more than 200 years in state prison.
