WEISER, Idaho (AP) - Idaho public health authorities say they’ve confirmed two human cases of the West Nile virus infection.
The Idaho Statesman reports the two adults from Washington County in western Idaho are the first known human cases in the state in 2019.
One person older than 30 was diagnosed with West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease.
The second person was older than 60 and suffered from West Nile virus fever.
In 2006, Idaho had almost 1,000 infections and 23 deaths, which was more cases of the illness than any other state.
West Nile is usually contracted from the bite of an infected mosquito. It is not spread from person-to-person through casual contact.
Symptoms of infection often include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash.
