PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A council of governments in southern Maine is receiving federal money for a pilot program designed to improve transportation options for older, disabled and low-income residents.
The Federal Transit Administration’s Human Service Coordination Research program is funding the $70,000 grant to the Greater Portland Council of Governments. The money will help the council test out a service called “Shopper Links,” which is a weekly shuttle that assists members of vulnerable populations.
Republican Sen. Susan Collins and independent Sen. Angus King say the service would help meet a need for free and affordable transportation to grocery stores. They say the project could be especially beneficial in Maine, which is a largely rural state with an aging population.
