ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A coalition of public transit supporters is celebrating a plan to impose new tolls on motorists entering the busiest parts of Manhattan as a way to raise money for New York City’s subways.
The #FixTheSubway and Fix Our Transit groups both supported the toll plan, which lawmakers approved on Monday. The groups brought together transit advocates, environmental groups, business organizations and local leaders who supported the long-debated toll idea.
They plan to hold an event Thursday in Manhattan to thank Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and top lawmakers for making tolls a priority in this year’s state budget.
Actual toll amounts will be set by transportation officials. The tolls will vary depending on traffic as a way to encourage transit use while raising badly needed revenue for the subways.
