COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - Colchester is getting more than $1 million in federal funding to help repair a popular causeway across a portion of Lake Champlain that was heavily damaged during a storm last year.

The flooding in May 2018 created sinkholes, washed out gravel and damaged a bridge. Temporary fixes by the town and state allowed cyclists and pedestrians to return to the path soon after, and the town is now getting $1.1 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for permanent fixes and to mitigate the risk of future damage.

Vermont Public Radio reports similar FEMA funds will go to the Vermont Electric Cooperative, which experienced outages in the same storm.
