COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina woman has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to preparing and presenting false tax returns.

U.S. Attorney Sherri Lydon, in a news release Thursday, said 32-year-old Ashley E. Browning, of Union, also was ordered to pay more than $200,000 in restitution to the federal government.

The Spartanburg Herald-Journal reports Browning prepared and filed multiple tax returns for customers in exchange for fees. She did the work from her home and also at the homes of her customers. Lydon’s office says she repeatedly submitted false information about customers’ income, federal withholding and educational expenses. As a result, the government issued $200,000 more in refunds based on the false information.
