A new “Poseidon” will rule the seas if Russian President Vladimir Putin has his way.
The submarine Belgorod launched this week in Severodvinsk, which defense experts believe capable of carrying nuclear-tipped “Poseidon” underwater drones.
The submarine is expected to be deployed in 2020 or 2021.
Mr. Putin discussed the drones in a March 2018 address to the nation and commented on their ability to target aircraft carriers and coastal facilities with nuclear weapons.
“[Belgorod] measures 184 meters long, the longest submarine ever built, and will be capable of carrying six underwater drones,” Radio Free Europe reported Tuesday. “The drones themselves are expected to be ready for service in 2027, according to media reports citing a U.S. intelligence assessment.”
Journalists at the launch were prohibited from photographing or filming proceedings, the website added.
