NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport is again making a push to merge the city’s public high school with neighboring Middletown’s high school.
The Newport Daily News reports that the City Council unanimously passed a resolution Wednesday asking Mayor Jamie Bova to initiate a new effort to unify Rogers High School and Middletown High School.
Councilwoman Lynn Underwood Ceglie says “We are stronger together.” She says both current high school buildings need to be replaced and it makes more sense to build just one school rather than two just a few miles apart.
Bova says the communities are “so intertwined already” and a bigger school could have more educational offerings.
Previous unification efforts have failed.
Middletown Town Council President Robert Sylvia says he sees “no benefit” to and would never support a merger.
