Karl Marx’s famous slogan “From each according to his ability to each according to his need” would seem to fit Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s proposal for providing college tuition for some students (“Elizabeth Warren unveils plan to erase $50,000 of student debt for most Americans,” Web, April 22).

I obtained a college degree under the GI Bill. I served 16 months in the U.S. Army and seven months in the Army Air Corps after having been rejected by the U.S. Navy and Marines at age 17 because of partial color-blindness. I was in the Philippines for one year, in Manila six months, and on Leyte and Palawan for three months each. I would say it was a rewarding experience.

It seems to me instead of a plan such as Mrs. Warren’s, a government program could be initiated whereby young people could earn credits toward receiving financial aid for college or trade-school tuition by performing some sort of service to the country. That would instill an appreciation for and a sense of pride in the effort expended.

(Perhaps some member of Congress will see this letter and take up the cause, but don’t hold your breath.)
