ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - Prosecutors say a New Jersey police officer was legally justified in shooting and killing a man after what authorities called an unprovoked stabbing at an accident scene last year.
The Atlantic County prosecutor’s office said officials determined that presenting the case to a grand jury was unnecessary, and prosecutors said the state attorney general’s office agreed with that conclusion.
Authorities said Atlantic City police had responded June 22 to the scene of a hit-and-run crash with injuries. During that investigation, prosecutors said, a man who wasn’t involved approached and “in an unprovoked attack” stabbed the officer in the torso with a knife.
Officials said the officer fired his service weapon, hitting 32-year-old Timothy Deal, who later died at a hospital. The officer was treated and released.
