The uncle of a man who was shot at by two Connecticut police officers says his nephew was involved in an argument at a gas station before the shooting, not an attempted armed robbery cited by police officials.
Rodney Williams said Friday that his nephew, 21-year-old Paul Witherspoon III, argued with a newspaper delivery man who cut in front of him in the line at the Hamden gas station Tuesday morning, just before the shooting that injured Witherspoon’s girlfriend, 22-year-old Stephanie Washington.
Authorities said a Hamden officer and a Yale University officer stopped a car in New Haven in connection with an attempted robbery at the gas station and opened fire when Witherspoon got out of the car abruptly. He was not injured.
Washington is being treated for injuries police say are not life-threatening.

Connecticut religious leaders have met with government officials to try to ease concerns after a police-involved shooting that wounded a woman and sparked several protests.
Local clergy met with Hamden officials Friday, three days after a Hamden officer and a Yale University officer opened fire on a car in New Haven. The Rev. Boise Kimber, senior pastor of First Calvary Baptist Church, says Hamden police agreed to implement urban trauma and de-escalation training for officers.
Authorities say the officers stopped a car while investigating an attempted armed robbery reported in Hamden and opened fire when the driver got out of the car abruptly. Police said no weapons were found in the vehicle.
Officials say a 22-year-old woman in the car suffered a non-life threatening wound. No arrests were made.
