METHUEN, Mass. (AP) - State police say four people were hospitalized when a crash involving a motorcycle and a car led almost immediately to second crash involving two more motorcycles and a car.

Troopers responded to Route 213 westbound near Interstate 93 in Methuen at about 7 p.m. Sunday for a report of a motorcycle involved in a crash, which caused an immediate traffic backup. The backup then caused the second and third motorcycles to strike a car.

One of the motorcycle operators was taken to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries. Two other motorcyclists and a woman who was a passenger on a motorcycle were taken to Lawrence General Hospital. The woman was then flown to Lahey Medical Center.

The chain of events remains under investigation.
