LEAKESVILE, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi prison is setting up a notification system after a convicted murderer escaped last summer.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections says it’s testing the system Thursday around South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville. The department says the system will call all landline and mobile phones in Greene County, plus send email and text messages.
Prison Superintendent Joe Errington says the system lets people call or text back with information.
Michael F. Wilson, nicknamed “Pretty Boy Floyd,” escaped July 5 and was captured days later. Residents were angered, especially because they weren’t notified of Wilson’s escape for at least two hours. A local newspaper publisher and others gave Wilson car rides, not knowing who he was.
The prison installed another 26,000 feet (8,000 meters) of razor wire after Wilson’s escape.
