Sen. Mazie Hirono said Thursday Attorney General William P. Barr “played into” President Trump’s narrative by saying the FBI spied on Mr. Trump’s campaign.

“When Barr opens his mouth, Trump’s words come popping out. So I’m sure that made Trump very happy because it totally played into the Trump narrative that this is all some kind of plot to get him,” the Hawaii Democrat said on CNN’s “New Day” show.

“I found it astounding that the attorney general would use a highly charged word like ’spying …,’ but he sounded like the president to me.”

Mr. Barr said Wednesday during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing that the Obama-led FBI did spy on Mr. Trump’s campaign.

“I think spying did occur,” he told the Senate. “The question is whether it was adequately predicated.”

The attorney general later clarified when asked about the basis for his suspicions.

“OK. I am concerned about it, and I was asked about whether there was any basis for it. I believe there is a basis for my concern, but I’m not going to discuss the basis.”
