BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - Officials at Vermont’s Brattleboro Memorial Hospital say they hope to be able to pick up some of the slack caused by the upcoming closure of the Childbirth Center at Springfield Hospital.

Brattleboro hospital president Steven Gordon tells the Brattleboro Reformer that while the number of babies being born at his hospital is declining, there are no plans to discontinue the service and his hospital plans to staff an office part-time in Springfield that will see patients two days a week.

Springfield hospital plans to close its birthing center on June 1.

After that, expectant mothers will have their babies at other regional hospitals, including Brattleboro.

Gordon said an increased number of deliveries in Brattleboro would be a welcome change.
