GREENWOOD, W.Va. (AP) - Health officials in West Virginia say two jail inmates have been diagnosed with hepatitis A.
News outlets report the inmates were diagnosed Friday while four other inmates were showing hepatitis A symptoms at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.
The Monongalia County Health Department says in a news release employees from three county health departments administered hepatitis A vaccines Saturday to about 850 inmates at the jail Saturday.
State health officials say there have been 1,166 cases of hepatitis A in West Virginia. About half have occurred in Kanawha County.
Hepatitis A is a communicable disease of the liver caused by a virus. It is usually transmitted person-to-person or by consuming contaminated food or water.
