LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A former Arkansas judge has been appointed to review claims that some of the signatures submitted in favor of a ballot measure imposing new term limits on lawmakers should be invalidated.
The Arkansas Supreme Court on Friday named Mark Hewitt as a special master in the lawsuit challenging the proposed constitutional amendment.
The measure would limit Arkansas lawmakers to two four-year terms in the Senate and three two-year terms in the House, with a total cap of 10 years in office.
Arkansas lawmakers are currently limited to a total of 16 years in the House, Senate or a combination of both.
The lawsuit challenges the signatures and the wording of the ballot title.
The court ordered Hewitt to file his report with the court by Sept. 25.
